Dr. Nicholas Rafaill

"Being an orthodontist means helping people live healthier, happier lives.

Straightening an individual's teeth creates a great smile.

As an orthodontist, I spend my days helping remarkable people change their lives. A person's smile says so much about them and is often the first thing people notice. When someone is ashamed of their crooked teeth, they hide their smile and are often afraid to make eye contact.

But when they have a beautiful smile, that person is confident and secure in social situations. They actively engage with others, talking and laughing, smiling, with nary a thought to how their teeth appear. They know their smile looks incredible.

It also improves their dental health, as it's easier for the person to brush and floss properly. Correcting malocclusions also means the person's bite is good, which relieves stress on their jaw and facial muscles.

My father was an orthodontist who practiced in this area for more than 40 years. I loved visiting him and working in his practice during high school, being drawn to the science and art required to create smiles.

But I was attracted mainly by his ability to change people's lives for the better truly. I cannot imagine a more rewarding profession.”

Education

"I earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the Dental School at the University of Minnesota. I then completed a Fellowship in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ) before studying Orthodontics at the Eastman Dental Center at the University of Rochester.

Each year I complete many hours of continuing orthodontic education. By remaining current on emerging technologies and treatments, I ensure my patients access to the best care options.”

Shelby Township Braces

Braces from Straight Smiles Orthodontics in Shelby Township, Novi, and Rochester Hills are an excellent choice for correcting complex tooth issues.

Braces don’t require some of the more complex technology or expensive equipment that newer treatments can, meaning they are a cost-effective orthodontic option.

Traditional metal braces are one of the most efficient orthodontic tools Dr. Rafaill uses to straighten smiles.

They’re made out of metal or ceramic brackets that are affixed to the teeth, then connected by wires and tiny rubber bands or elastics.

These brackets, wires, and bands work together to apply the gentle pressure that will gradually move the teeth into the positions we want them to be in as long as you have regular adjustments with Dr. Rafaill.

Shelby Township Rochester Hills Invisalign

Invisalign is incredibly popular at our offices in Shelby Township, Novi, and Rochester Hills and is the top alternative to traditional braces. Instead of brackets and bands, Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten your teeth.

Invisalign aligners are made of comfortable plastic and customized to fit snugly over your teeth.

To keep your teeth moving in the direction you want them to, you’ll need to switch your invisible trays out for the next one in the series every one to two weeks as directed by Dr. Rafaill.

The Invisalign system can only work if you follow the guidelines from Dr. Rafaill. You’ll wear your aligners 20-22 hours per day throughout treatment. If you neglect to wear the aligners as directed, it can impede the results and also add time to your treatment.

Invisalign is effective for correcting the most common orthodontic issues. For some complex cases, Invisalign may not be a good option. A free consultation with Dr. Rafaill at Straight Smiles Orthodontics in Shelby Township, Novi, or Rochester Hills will allow us to determine if Invisalign is right for you.
